Rather, he actually landed on a number of the Caribbean Islands and made several voyages that ended up reaching South America. 014h Either way, Cabot was the first European to reach North America since Leif Eriksson, as Columbus never set foot on the mainland and remained in the Caribbean. The Dutch held claim to this land until 1664, when the English sent a naval unit that threatened to take New Netherlands. The Director-General of the colony, Peter Stuyvesant, surrendered the territory and the English renamed the territory New York. This led to the Second Anglo-Dutch War, in which the Dutch officially gave up claim to the land in the Treaty of Breda. 028k European colonization territories in the Americas. 0283 The Formation of the 13 Colonies 030k Map of the thirteen colonies, 1776. 0303 Through the Eyes of an Eyewitness - -Charles Ball, former slave 032f Illustration of tobacco farming, from Harper’s New Monthly Magazine, 1855. 033h Often termed the Seven Years’ War since its main fighting period lasting seven years (1756-1763), it is known in the United States as the French and Indian War. 035k1 Map of troop movement during the French and Indian War. 0353 Can You Believe This Actually Happened? 0353 Which crop was originally intended for the Virginia Colony? Indeed, though prosperity skyrocketed, wealth inequality led to numerous conflicts. 1223 WOMEN’S SUFFRAGE 1253 Misconceptions There were more African-Americans in political office during the Reconstruction era than at any other time in American history. 125h Women had the right to vote before the 19th amendment was passed. 125h History Has its Eyes on us Today 1272 Chapter 5 – The Great War and the Great Depression Immigration in the United States 1293 Constant Wars and Security 130h McKinley was then the third president to be assassinated, after Lincoln and President Garfield. 131h Roosevelt was also instrumental in building the Panama Canal and, in yet another effort to display America’s world prominence, he helped mediate a treaty between the Russians and the Japanese, ending the Russo-Japanese War. This mediation effort earned Roosevelt a Nobel Peace Prize. 1313 WORLD WAR I 135h David Lloyd George, put together a list of explanations as to how they saw the outcome of the war. Wilson wanted the outcome of the war to be peaceful and his plan for peace came to be known as the Fourteen Points.  The primary purpose was to provide a public strategy for ending the war.  Essentially, if he was going to endanger the lives of Americans in order to fight a war in Europe, he wanted everyone to understand why.  The first five points of his speech were directed towards international affairs and the last eight dealt with things specific to the questions of how to divide the territory. 1373 LEAGUE OF NATIONS AND AN ERA OF PROSPERITY 138h This created a divide in post-WWI America between the drys and the wets, or those who advocated Prohibition and those who didn’t. 1423 The Roaring Twenties 142h the 20s saw major advancements in consumerism and a great deal of change in popular culture. For the first time in American history, more people were living in cities than in the country and the 20s saw the nation’s total wealth nearly double. The nation started to become united under the same products, and national advertising and chain stores became the new norm. 1423 The Great Depression 143h The most common belief is that it all started right after the 1929 crash of the stock market, ominously remembered as Black Tuesday. During the roaring 20s, right after World War I, rural Americans started moving into the cities because of the sudden boom in the industrial sector. However, while the cities did become more prosperous, this also led to overproduction on the agricultural side. 143h Some economists, including Milton Friedman, suggested that the Federal Reserve was to blame for not bailing out banks by lending them money in order to stay afloat. 144h On September 20th 1929, the London Stock Exchange crashed following the arrest and conviction of top British investors for fraud and forgery. This caused a panic amongst American investors, because the huge volume of stocks sold at London caused the prices in the ticker tapes in America to be hours late. 1443 After the crash 144h Several years after the Black Tuesday, people started feeling the effects. Consumer spending drastically declined, which caused industrial production to go down as well, and this resulted in the laying off of hundreds of thousands of workers. By 1933, the Great Depression was at its peak; almost 15 million Americans were unemployed, and almost half of the country’s banking institutions had permanently closed shop. 1463 A ray of hope 147h Civil Conservation Corps (CCC), which sent over 250,000 young men to camps to work on reforestation and conservation projects.  This program removed a lot of extra workers from the cities and provided a healthy arrangement for young men to make money for their families.  Another important program was the Works Progress Administration (WPA), which gave work to over 8 million workers in construction, arts, theaters, and other literary projects. 1493 The unexpected benefit of World War II 1503 Misconceptions 150h The Great Depression was the country’s first depression 153b 20210619 =108+45 71% Willis-USHistory 1532 Chapter 6 - The Second World War 1533 WORLD WAR II 1583 Women in World War II 1593 African-Americans in WWII 1593 OPERATION PAPERCLIP 1603 INTERNMENT CAMPS 1643 DEVELOPMENT OF NUCLEAR POWER 1663 COLD WAR, KOREA, and McCARTHYISM 169h Bay of Pigs 170h Cuban Missile Crisis 1713 Misconceptions The atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki ended the U.S. war with Japan. 172h History Has its Eyes on Us Today 1742 Chapter 7 - The Cold War and Pax Americana The Space Race 174h Space race casualties 176h Apollo lunar module. 1843 The Vietnam War 1883 Nixon and the Watergate Scandal 1903 Did Nixon get convicted for the Watergate Scandal? 1903 End of the Cold War and Beginning of Pax Americana 1903 MAD AND THE STRATEGIC DEFENSE INITIATIVE 1913 END OF THE U.S.S.R. Did not find any hierarcy of headings under 8 chapters, although several sizes and boldness of fonts. Already in the first chapter it turned out that the discovery of America has been a more versatile business than that of Leif Eriksson and Christoffer Columbus. Another interesting feature of this book are the many maps illustrating the gradual composition of the final result as the USA is today. Involved were not only surrounding old colonial governments but also several Indian territories. And not always new acquisitions were materialized through battles by armed forces but also by peaceful means of negotiations and trade. I knew only about the Alaskan affair with the Russian empire. Who knows what would have happened without this affair? Then the emergence of the Union reconciling the many different interests and constitutions of ever increasing number of individual states. Same kind of integration processes are known both before and after the American in e.g. Germany, Italy and now recently in the emergency of the European Union. The treatment of the slavery turned out as a bigger and more painful matter than could be expected with a background of racially unilateral society. American participation in the world wide wars, instead, is a more familiar matter here in the neighborhood of big Russia. All in all, this Willis history is a very welcome pack of education and does not remain the last in this kind for me. Have already subscribed some other of this kind. I cannot deny all five stars in spite of the structural weaknesses, allieved, however by fresh aspects of eyewitness testimonies and educational speculation of alternative possibilities. @@@ *** Willis, William D..
